Takhini Hot Springs, a natural hot spring located near Whitehorse in north-western Canada, is the location of a fun and bizarre annual tradition called the hair freezing contest.
Every February, the hot springs’ management invites bathers to come and style their hair by wetting it and styling it as it freezes. Even in winter, the water remains a balmy 36-42 C (96-107 F), while the optimal February temperature for styling frozen hair is around -30 C (-22 F). The winner of the contest gets a $150 cash prize!
